August – Konas Scoop Shop – 6361 Knickerbocker Rd.

August photo 8-17Scott Smith states that he and his wife, Janet Smith, always wanted to own the classic mom and pop ice cream shop. Scott Smith said that “When this business became available we decided to take it on.” The Smiths opened the shop under the new name of Kona’s Scoop Shop on Memorial Day of 2016.

Kona’s Scoop Shop features Gifford’s hard ice cream and Turkey Hill soft ice cream. In addition to serving people, Kona’s serves dog treats for man’s best friend. Dog treats consist of two milk bones with ice cream in the middle. The folks at Kona’s enjoy a challenge. The next time you are there have them create a milkshake, or sundae that you have dreamt up.

Smith says their goal is to become the place local residents come to buy ice cream after they have enjoyed events at Casey Park or in town. “We have a great location here. It is just a laid back space with picnic tables and an opportunity to relax for a while. We are just a little shop in a little town with all local residents serving our clients.” Smith says he hopes Kona’s Scoop Shop will become the place that becomes a gathering spot for generations of families.

The name Kona is the name of the Smith’s dog which in turn is named after the Kona winds of Hawaii.

Smith says that Kona’s Scoop Shop is part of a larger organization and that the business model for the overall organization is that all of the businesses are run by students. “Kona’s Scoop Shop will always be perpetuated by the kids. It will never be about my wife and I being here. It will be about us supporting the kids. When Nicole Stein, the current manager moves on to her full time job, another student will step into the vacated managerial position.”

Even though Kona’s Scoop Shop is a mom and pop enterprise, they still have all of the latest and greatest methods for you to pay for your ice cream. Apple pay and a chip card reader are included.

When asked what was the best thing about working at Kona’s Scoop Shop, Margaret Stein, sister of Nicole, said “I like working here because I like working in a place where everyone is excited to come and because everyone likes ice cream and everyone is smiling and excited.”

  Kona’s hours of operation are Sunday – Thursday 4 p.m. until 9 p.m.

  Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.
