John Lockwood started in the plumbing business working for his father in 1967. By 1972, Lockwood was working for himself. John Lockwood Plumbing has grown from a two-person business operating out of a home to a 25 person operation functioning out of a 10,000 square foot facility.
Over the years it became difficult for Lockwood to bid jobs and manage them too. The business has evolved into several areas of expertise — residential, commercial, service and remodeling. In 1990, Gary Lockwood joined the family business full time. Gary and another employee, Tom Williams, have taken charge of the overall day to day operations, allowing John to concentrate on the estimating of commercial work. The residential and commercial work are connected in that when one slows down, the other picks up. “Currently, we are very busy with commercial and residential jobs, as well as service and remodeling work,” said Gary Lockwood. “We only employ highly qualified, motivated plumbers. Once we train our employees, we do everything we can to keep them. We have some employees who have been here more than 10 years. Not only are we family owned, we are one big family here at John Lockwood Plumbing.”
John Lockwood Plumbing centers its business in the Ontario and Webster area. However it is common for them to work in Syracuse, Batavia and the Canandaigua Lake area. “We are a completely mobile plumbing business. Our trucks are set up with the tools and materials needed for just about any plumbing task. The material in the trucks are inventoried and restocked each day,” Gary Lockwood added. “Our facility, built in 2010, allows us to keep a large inventory of plumbing supplies. We only use top of the line materials on our jobs. It just isn’t worth it to us to use anything else. Consequently, we have very few callbacks.”
John Lockwood Plumbing currently provides plumbing services to more than 30 contractors.
Lockwood concluded, “We are very safety conscious at John Lockwood Plumbing. Our trucks carry fire extinguishers and many other safety supplies. We also conduct weekly “Toolbox Talks” safety meetings with our staff.”
