Julie DiLella, CFO of Empire Wrecking states that the direction of the company was set about 50 years ago by her grandfather Joseph, patriarch of the company, and his wife Betty, with a simple statement “I want to have dinner with my family every night”. This statement ensured that the company would do most of it’s work in the Rochester area. In about 1963 urban renewal came to Rochester so there were great opportunities in the demolition business. The business passed from Joseph to his son Vincent (Jimmy) and his wife Gail and now is the third generation of ownership with their kids, Vince, Joe, Mike, and Julie at the helm. There is potential for the business to be passed along to a fourth generation.

Empire Wrecking moved from a Railroad Street site near the Rochester Public Market to 6372 Knickerbocker Road, near Railroad Avenue, Ontario about 9 years ago. Empire Wrecking also recycles salvageable items, offers roll-off container service, sells sand, gravel, decorative stone, and topsoil.

Because of the decision to stay local, Empire Wrecking will demolish anything, from a small garage to large buildings. Empire Wrecking is a bonded contractor on the emergency rotation list for the City of Rochester. If a building becomes unsafe because of a fire or collapse, and the City’s authority determines that it must be taken down; a wrecking company is called to demolish the building. These calls can come any time of the day or night 365 days a year. Holidays are not exempt from these kinds of events. DiLella says that the City of Rochester is very organized when these emergency events occur.

Demolition has changed over the years. There has been a lot of progress with the equipment available. Because of good equipment work is done all winter. Asbestos removal and trucking has become a big part of the workload. Empire created it’s own asbestos removal company to make sure jobs are done on time. The summer months are busier and sometimes additional help is hired as needed. There are currently 15 employees at Empire. “It is very important for us to have a safe environment for our employees,” stated Julie DiLella.
